A wonderful color woodcut by Tytgat, depicting himself, his wife, and his daughter fleeing Belgium, just as the Holy Family fled into Egypt. This is an allegory of how the "invasion" of French art forced Belgian art into exile.

Desmedt 17: "(...) oorspronkelijk gemaakt voor het Nederlandse tijdschrift De Gemeenschap nr 12 (Kerstnummer, december 1925). (...) Bij het gelijknamige schilderij uit datzelfde jaar [Vlucht naar Egypte] (Dasnoy nr. 162), schreef Tytgat volgende commentaar: 'Un artiste flamand et sa femme, allaitant son enfant, assis sur un âne, fuyant la Belgique à cause de l'invasion de l'art français et aussi, par l'encouragement des collectionneurs belges pour cet art."
