The motif corresponds to a scene that takes place in Ödön von Horváth's last novel from 1937, ‘A Child of Our Time’, in which the author parables the rise of fascism in Germany and Austria. It is quite possible that the politically committed artist Otto Rudolf Schatz, who returned to Austria from a short stay in the United States in 1937, read the novel when it was published.
