A charming set of seventeen drawings, in the Symbolist style, on extremely fine antique Japanese wove paper, intended to illustrate "The Nut-Brown Maid", a 15th-century English ballad.
The first drawing, obviously intended to be the title-page, features the title of the poem in stately calligraphy, as well as a small watercolor drawing. The remaining 16 drawings correspond to the other stanzas of the poem. The stanza numbers are penciled in at the bottom of each drawing, usually two stanzas per drawing.
The sheets measure 25 x 22 cm. The drawings measure about 9 x 13 cm (the remaining space was intended for the text, which was never written in, and the margins.)
